Foundation AwardsRobert K. Powers Distinguished Service AwardThis award is named for a former member of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Board of the Catholic Foundation. It is presented periodically to individuals who have made a significant contribution of their time, talent and treasure to the Foundation. Recipients:Richard Umbdenstock - 2006 Catholic Community Service AwardThis award is given annually to individuals, and groups or organizations within the Diocese of Spokane who give their skills, expertise and resources to benefit the Catholic Community in eastern Washington. 2009 Recipients
2009 NomineesRuth & Wayne Peterson - Nominated by Steve Schreck, Project TimothyRuth and Wayne are the parents of three grown children and have five grandchildren. They have volunteered at Project Timothy for over eight years serving terms as president, secretary and treasurer. The Peterson's were instrumental in the move to different facilities this past year and have been organizing the Christmas Food Basket program for seven years. They present the financial report at each monthly meeting and provide guidance based on their experience. Ruth is involved with the Waitsburg Choral group and she provides lunch each week for the high school students at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Dayton. Wayne is a member of the Waitsburg Commercial Club and heads up the annual Salmon BBQ. He is also involved with the Waitsburg city government and is currently the Chairman of the Board at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Both Ruth and Wayne have chosen to stay involved in many realms of their community and church even after retirement and exhibit their Christian values in everything they do. Bryan & Seng Anderson - Nominated by Dick Pelkie, St. Patrick Catholic SchoolBryan and Seng are very generous to St. Patrick's School, serving as auction chairs and helping to make all events a success. They have donated a school sign and milk cooler to the school in addition to assisting in the organization of the Run-a-Thon by having Ronald McDonald come and visit with the kids. They actively participate in Catholic Schools' week and Mass by running a TV raffle at the Italian Dinner. Bryan and Seng are always happy to help in any capacity and are joyful in their everyday personalities. They both have demanding jobs but always make time for their daughter and the school. They give 100% and are wonderful role models to students and parents alike. Reverend Bob Baggett - Nominated by Brother Fred Mercy, S.J.Bob is Chaplain at the Okanogan County Jail and has been serving there for 15 years. He volunteers there and brings his spirit-filled influence to the inmates and staff by bringing Christ into their lives. Bob is a former pastor of Nazarene Church in Okanogan and has been a visiting pastor to Society of Jesus and St. Mary's Mission. His younger years were exposed to a life of drugs and fast living which gives him an excellent background today to counsel the inmates of the jail that are suffering from that same lifestyle. Prison & Detention Ministry Volunteers - Nominated by Sr. Myrta Iturriaga S.PThe volunteers give their precious time and show up all year long regardless of the weather conditions to bring hope to the inmates. These volunteers are faithful in everything they do, preparing themselves to deliver the Gospel and share the word with residents. They often miss time with their own families and drive to areas from Spokane, to Pasco and Connell. The volunteers are sometimes forgotten in our daily blessings but are routinely fulfilling the call of Jesus in their own personal lives to take care of the poor and bring some light and happiness to the less fortunate. Stella McDonald - Nominated by Father Michael Blackburn OFM, St. Francis of Assisi, SpokaneStella has been a long-time member of the Finance Council and has helped to pull the Parish out of debt. She has been involved with the Parish Peace and Justice Committee, a member of the Women's Club, Immaculate Heart Guild and the Parish Council. In addition, Stella has been a Eucharistic Minister and organizes the weekly coffee and donuts for parishioners. She is a hard worker and has volunteered many hours in helping the parish and those in need throughout her community. JoHanna Andrews - Nominated by Dolores Cline, Lisa Kowitz & Shelley Wiedemeier, Immaculate Conception ParishJoHanna works tirelessly to make things work and has touched the lives of many at Immaculate Conception Parish and the Colville community. On the parish level, JoHanna organized a Faith-Based Community Group and started the Friendship Feast Meal Ministry. She has organized activities for families ranging from parish picnics to our "Summer Serenade" for the women of the parish. She has generously given her time and talents to help with children's programs such as Vacation Bible School, holiday programs, receptions for Confirmation and First Eucharist as well as providing meals for our High School youth group meetings. JoHanna also spends time making quilts with the Women of Grace Quilt Ministry to provide comfort to parishioners in need. Lydia Cordova Buettner - Nominated by Lina Cunningham, Secular FranciscansLydia is the mother of three daughters and has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is very active in church ministry as a volunteer at the Dayton St. Vincent De Paul, Chairman of American Cancer Memorial and Education Chairman for P.E.O. Lydia was also Columbia County Treasurer for 13 years. Her church activities include Chairman of the Prayer Chain Ministry, Parish Council, Altar Society and Eucharistic Minister. Her dedication to the church and community is very deep and outstretched and those who know Lydia are touched and benefitted by her concern and devotion to those in need. Radford George - Nominated by Father Jake Morton, S.J. and Nancy Armstrong-Montes, Sacred Heart MissionRadford is a leader in our church community and assists Father Jake Morton, SJ at the altar. He has helped lead rosaries at funerals and is active in the Cursillo Movement and will be Rector for the Men's Cursillo this month. Radford keeps up the lawn at the church and gets trees for the church during Christmas and willow branches for Corpus Christi. He has helped take away the void in the parish by a close parishioner's death in June of 2007 and is a prayer leader when Father Jake is not available. He is a dedicated servant of the Catholic Church on the Colville Indian Reservation and is a great role model for men in our parish. As a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend, Radford works with the community youth and has shown himself to be a very caring Christian man. Shawn Workland - Nominated by the Assumption Parish Staff and Father Mike Savelesky, Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary ParishShawn has been a member of Assumption Parish since 1992 and has served on the Catholic Youth Congress, the Diocesan School Advisory Council and the School Advisory Council assisting in hundreds of school and parish events. She is always at church and school events and helps out wherever she is needed. She often blesses meetings and planning teams with great insight and is always generous with her time. Holy Spirit Community - Nominated by Deacon John Ruscheinsky, Immaculate Heart Retreat CenterThe Sisters of the Holy Spirit Community have been an integral part of the retreat ministry through both their prayer life and works. These women are comprised of Sr. Rita Lemire, Sr. Elaine Roy, Sr. Brunhilde Josbacher, and the late Sr. Elizabeth Pfieffer. They have served in capacities that have enhanced the retreat and liturgical experience for all who pass through the retreat center serving as Sacristans, housekeepers and liaisons between the center and its volunteer base. These sisters have contributed immensely to the retreat apostolate of the Diocese of Spokane and have a long-standing commitment to active prayer for all who have attended retreats. 2008
