Foundation AwardsRobert K. Powers Distinguished Service AwardThis award is named for a former member of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Board of the Catholic Foundation. It is presented periodically to individuals who have made a significant contribution of their time, talent and treasure to the Foundation. Recipients:Richard Umbdenstock - 2006 Catholic Community Service AwardThis award is given annually to individuals, and groups or organizations within the Diocese of Spokane who give their skills, expertise and resources to benefit the Catholic Community in eastern Washington. See photos from the 2010 Awards Ceremony. 2010 NomineesDeacon Douglas P. Banks - Nominated by Maureen Durheim & the St. Thomas More School FacultyDeacon Doug has been a teacher and administrator for Catholic education for over 31 years. During his tenure at St. Thomas More, he has served as a teacher, coach, Athletic Director, Vice Principal and currently, is Principal. Doug has implemented many programs to the school including a retreat program for the 7th & 8th graders four times a year. With the 8th graders he has also organized "Pennies from Heaven" which raised $2500 in pennies to support Trinity School in a fundraising "match" program with other benefactors bringing the total raised to $5000. He also organized a similar program called "Quarters from Heaven" in which the proceeds went toward a new House of Charity and St. Margaret's Shelter. In 2001, Doug entered the Diocesan Deacon Formation program and was ordained to the Permanent Diaconate on June 24, 2005. He has served as Deacon for St. Thomas More Parish and became Parish Administrator in 2007. Deacon Doug has worked diligently to maintain a caring community and is dedicated to the faith development of the school ministry. He performs daily acts of kindness by remembering birthdays, consoling adults and children who have lost loved ones and gladly opens his heart and home to friends at any time. Cataldo School - Nominated by Libby Hein, Catholic Charities Childbirth & Parenting Alone (CAPA)Cataldo School not only teaches the importance of service to the community, but lives and leads by example. They demonstrate outstanding leadership through their desire to serve others and through their compassion towards those less fortunate. Over the last year, Cataldo School helped organize and provide a beautiful Christmas celebration for single parent families. The school collected toys for over 50 families including gifts for young moms and their children. The students also helped with the CAPA Christmas party having shopped for and wrapped presents to deliver to the families. They served a traditional Christmas Turkey dinner for the young moms and children. Childcare was provided for the younger kids so that moms could have a moment to relax and enjoy their meals. The Cataldo 1st Graders organized and performed a play celebrating the birth of Jesus and stayed to help clean up after the party was over. What a tremendous blessing the students of Cataldo were this past holiday season. Karen Crum - Nominated by Fr. Michael Savelesky & Assumption Parish StaffKaren is the organizer and promoter of the parish chapter of WINGS (Women in Growth Spiritually) and MOMS (Ministry of Mothers Sharing). She volunteers for anything and everything including school and parish activities. She is a minister for Holy Communion, is engaged in Pro-Life ministries and is a member of Catholic Charities CAPA. She attends Mass regularly with her family and is a witness to a solid and informed faith. Generosity to the church comes easily to Karen and she is a role-model to our other parishioners. Fatima Guatemala Mission Committee - Nominated by Pastoral Council, Our Lady of FatimaThe Fatima Guatemala Committee originated in 1965 with five couples from the parish. Over time, the Committee has sent school buses to Fr. Mertens to help transport students from Santa Lucia & Novillero to school in Nahuala. The Committee has also provided scholarships to students in seminary and high school to complete higher education. In 1993, the Committee helped with the construction of a school in Tzamjuyub to educate poor children living in and around the volcano. When Hurricane Mitch hit Ixtahuacan in 1998, the Committee raised and sent $10,500 to help with the reconstruction of the town’s church. Throughout the history of Our Lady of Fatima, the Committee has provided several scholarships to students, provided teachers with electronic equipment, books and musical instruments and have donated a minimum of $20,000 each year to educational efforts in Guatemala. Roy & Phyllis Lamb - Nominated by St. Joseph Parish in RockfordBoth Phyllis and Roy have been the anchors at St. Joseph's Parish. They are always willing to volunteer their time for any committee including setting up flowers in front of church or working the food booth at the Spokane County Fair. They both serve as Eucharist Ministers and Phyllis performs readings at Mass. Roy is a member of Knights of Columbus at St. Mary's in Spokane Valley and also serves as President of St. Joseph's Parish Council. Phyllis is active in Right to Life. Their leadership in the Parish and Diocese serves as an example of standing up for Christian beliefs and values worthy of our Catholic Community. Dave McGann - Nominated by Fatima Pastoral Council, Our Lady of Fatima ParishFor the past five years, Dave has been a model for community service. He has provided meals for the volunteers at the annual Christmas Bureau as well as volunteering at the Bureau year-round. His most recent accomplishments include Serra Club President, serving on the Bishops Finance Council and the boards of Catholic Cemeteries and Immaculate Heart Retreat Center. Dave also served as a finance chairman for the building of the new church at Our Lady of Fatima Parish and was on the committee to raise funds for the parish part of the Settlement Campaign. Dave is an all-around unassuming asset to Our Lady of Fatima Parish and our community. Parishioners Helping Parishioners (PHP) - Nominated by Fr. Al Grasher, St. Mary Presentation Catholic ParishThe PHP Mission is to provide prayer, presence and assistance to those in our faith community. This is done by offering companionship to the sick and homebound, visiting parishioners in hospitals, offering bereavement support through cards and personal contact, bringing food to the hungry and supporting those on the prayer list. This group began five years ago out of Living Faith and do most of their outreach without any recognition. They meet monthly to discuss the needs of the community and coordinate how to fulfill their ministry. PHP uses the assistance of the Greenhouse local food and clothing bank as well as occasional use of the Knights of Columbus and Altar Society whenever further assistance is needed. Robert & Rebecca Schmidlkofer - Nominated by Wendy Griffin, Gonzaga Preparatory SchoolOver the past six years, Bob and Becky have cheerfully volunteered their time and talents to help Gonzaga Prep in many ways. Bob installed new scoreboards in the gymnasiums and on the softball field, provided countless hours of consultation and electrical work to provide televised games from our athletic fields and helped in the renovation of the baseball complex for the use of Gonzaga Prep and the Catholic Grade School League. Becky has provided Gonzaga Prep with reproduction quality photographs for the Development and Alumni offices, Admissions office and the Athletic Director. These photographs have helped to recruit new students and to keep alumni connected and informed on what is happening through publications, the website and in fundraising. Frank X Taylor - Nominated by Fr. Michael Blackburn, OFMFrank provides many volunteer services for the community including teaching computer classes at Cathedral Plaza, working at the House of Charity, the Salvation Army's "Safehouse" and the St Vincent de Paul Society at St Francis of Assisi Parish helping people with utility and transportation needs. He helps the elderly by performing yard work using his own money to buy a lawn mower and other supplies. Frank has also helped in clearing the snow from the parish walkways and delivers parish donations of food to "Our Place". No matter what time of day it is, Frank will do whatever he can to help others. He does everything with patience and humility asking nothing for himself and always giving to others. 2009
